2008 Spin:
Mark Martin begins his 26th year on NASCAR’s senior circuit in 2008, splitting seat time with 23-year-old rookie Aric Almirola. The duo will share time in Dale Earnhardt, Inc.’s famed No. 8 Chevy with sponsorship from the U.S. Army
Martin, who came within .02 seconds of capturing his first Daytona 500 win last season, will participate in 26 points-paying events in the No. 8 machine as well as the Budweiser Shootout and the Sprint All-Star race. The veteran led the point standings until his first scheduled “off-weekend” at Bristol last March and, although he had missed a month’s worth of races, was still in contention for a Chase spot at the season’s midway point.

As for 2008, expect more of the same consistency — and some flirtations with Victory Lane — from the circuit’s elder statesman.

“I think it’s going to be an exciting season,” Martin says. “I’m so excited to be behind the wheel of the No. 8 U.S. Army Chevrolet and to be working with (crew chief) Tony Gibson and the No. 8 Team. It’s an incredible honor to drive the No. 8 car for Dale Earnhardt, Inc., and we are excited about moving into the season.

“Those guys on this team really had some fast cars a year ago, and we are looking to build on that. Our goal is to be competitive and race up front this season.”

Martin currently ranks 17th on the all-time wins list with 35 career Cup victories.
